Hi, I’m Henry

About

I am a finance professional and quantitative thinker who has had 4+ years working in the finance industry. I enjoy using various quantitative tools and methods to model financial situations and optimise for the best solution. I enjoy leveraging code to find solutions to complex problems.  I’m comfortable with high-level languages like Python and associated modules for data analysis and machine learning.

I appreciate any opportunity to learn and apply new mathematical concepts — I love how well-formulated mathematics can open up a problem to new ways of being explored. When I’m out of the office, you can find me outside hiking, running or at the squash court. Or, reading, right now I’m reading Cormac Macarthy — Blood Meridian.

Experience

I’ve worked in the financial sector since the start of 2022. Most recently, I’ve worked as a:

Associate Portfolio Manager at Challenger Limited (April 2024 – present)
Gained experience managing a team working on multiple projects simultaneously, worked to build and maintain robust database tables, structure SQL queries and maintain best practice with shared code projects. Used Git, Python, SQL, Bash and more.

Analyst at Challenger Limited (April 2023 – April 2024)
Worked in small teams in SQL, Python and Excel to build sophisticated financial models for asset selection and management. Built out data structures for more accurate representation of various financial risks.

Graduate Trader at IMC (Jan – Dec 2022)
Participated in the extensive graduate trading bootcamp in which I received a comprehensive education in options theory, exchange logic, market dynamics, python and data analysis tools. From May, I worked on a trading desk developing algorithms to trade options and futures of KOSPI 200.

Skills

I enjoy working with a number of different tools in different contexts. Some of these include:

  • Python
  • Excel VBA
  • C#
  • Project Maintenance with git
  • SQL
  • ODBC & Database maintenance
  • Bash
  • Python & Associated Packages (numpy, scipy, pandas)
  • Matlab & Mathematica for mathematical modelling
  • Statistical analysis, monte carlo & bootstrap simulations

Education

University of St Andrews (UK) – MPhys Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (2015-2020)
Graduated with a first-class joint degree, specialising on abstract algebra and group theory in physics. Completed courses on measure theory, semigroups, contemporary research in groups, and representation theory of groups. I wrote a thesis on abstract algebra which explored structural links between algebras and their lattice of subalgebras. Dean’s List 2015-2020.

Kristin School (NZ) – IB Diploma (2012-2014)
Graduated with a 40/45 score in the IB programme. Higher Level subjects in English Literature, Physics and Chemistry.

Projects

Check out my GitHub (link), where I post recent projects I’ve been working on, such as:

  • Horse (🐎) a ML model that aims to match characteristics between horse races to determine likely winners in upcoming races.
  • PokerDS, a simple poker web application.

Sports & leisure

I enjoy an active lifestyle. You’ll often find me at:

  • The gym
  • Out running in a nearby park (I aim to run a marathon soon)
  • On the squash court

Book Club

I’ve always been an avid reader. You can follow me on Goodreads or read my book blog if you want to find out more.
